» Birthday: 9/15/???? (September 15th), year unknown. His birthday is given in the video game guidebook. ( Here's the page.)
» Age: Unknown. In the manga, he says he's in the school's university, which would suggest he’s in his twenties. It's up to you whether to connect show and manga canon. Whether you do or you don't, Akio is considerably older than he makes himself out to be; at least a decade or two have passed since the Nemuro Hall incident, and he doesn't appear to have aged since then. His actual age is really anyone’s guess. If you count Dios, you might say he’s as old as the idea of a prince is.
» Sun Sign: Virgo (... more)
» Blood Type: A, as seen in the Juju book. (... more)
» Sex: Undeniably Male
» Height: 201.5 cm (approx. 6'7). This is an estimate based on comparison to Utena in this height chart. I also made a chart showing estimating how tall the cast is on its knees compared to Akio's full height. No wonder he keeps Touga around.
Name: Akio Ohtori, or Ohtori Akio in traditional Japanese, where the surname comes first.
Note: Ohtori is the 'Passport Hepburn' style of romanization of the Japanese. Ootori (Modified Hepburn), Ōtori (Hepburn), and Outori ("Word processor style") also appear occasionally. This last style is how most of the names in Utena, such as Tenjou and Kyouichi, are romanized; Ohtori appears to be an exception rather than the rule. (...more)
» First Appearance: Episode 13 (Plotting a Locus), as the foreboding shadow talking to Dios about the trials Utena has conquered thus far.
» Introduction: Episode 14 (Boys of the Black Rose), as Anthy’s humble sibling, engaged to the incapacitated chairman’s daughter, Kanae Ohtori.
» Jobs: "I'm an educator. Plus some minor part time work." (From episode 33, The Prince Who Runs in the Night.)
Akio’s the Trustee Chairman of the Board, a position that appears functionally the same as a Dean or a Principal, though the title implies a more bureaucratic tone. He's a proxy in place of the actual Chairman, his fiancée's father, who fell ill around when Akio and Anthy met his family. It would seem this position came with his engagement to Kanae, and that the school is a family-operated affair. His other ‘work’ is administering instruction to the student council as the ominously titled ‘Ends of the World’. This instruction relates to the secretive dueling game they play—it’s unlikely Ends of the World has any suggestions for school dance themes. (Judging from the overly aristocratic and decadent mood they affect, one can only assume Touga’s hand in their planning.)
» Residence: The Chairman's wing of Ohtori Academy. That's the big phallus poking out of the middle of the school. He spends much of his time at the top, in a planetarium that’s apparently meant to be his office. He prefers to conduct his business on the two white couches he keeps there; only in its last appearance in the series do we see a desk in it. We only see two other floors: the floor Anthy and Utena live in later in the series, and the balcony halfway up the tower used by the Student Council for meetings.
» Pastimes: Akio’s the Wanna cook like Akio? Sort of? While rose hip and brandy jam all but requires fresh rose hips, your humble webmaster has successfully infused brandy with dried rose hips, which is more fun anyway if you're not feeding 14 year olds. The recipe?
- 1 750ml bottle of brandy (I used Hennessy VS cognac)
-
2 cups of dried rose hips (found easily through online suppliers)
-
1 tsp lemon zest
-
2 inch length of vanilla bean.
Infuse (that's 'soak in the booze') the rose hips for about a week, the lemon for a couple days, and the vanilla bean for a couple days, using a cheesecloth or coffee filter to strain out the final product. The times are the greater variable here, so taste often, and keep in mind that a couple weeks to sit after the infusion will relax and blend the flavors.
Rose hips are a bright, tart, slightly spicy flavor, very far removed from rose petals, and they lend themselves well to the flavors in decent brandy. Akio's a clever boy.
classic Renaissance man. Blame it on his age, blame it on his position, but he’s a man that knows a lot about a lot and little about everything. He seems particularly interested in mythology and the etymology surrounding it; given the show's utilization of common mythological themes, this is both intentionally and inadvertently self-referential of him. He frequently refers to the myths and symbolism of the stars and planets in particular, using his planetarium as a springboard in these
conversations. Akio's also familiar with the symbolism of plants, he's comfortable on either end of a camera, and could be said to have a passing interest in automobiles. He’s familiar enough with men’s fashions to sport styles that predate us viewers by almost a century, and most importantly, the man cooks. Really cooks. Food food. Not microwave mac and cheese. Rose hip and brandy jam. And cake. Decorated multi-layer cake. » Likes: Akio is the living embodiment of schadenfreude—he enjoys watching others under mental and emotional stress. It clearly amuses him, and for all that it always ends up in the bedroom, it likely turns him on. Simpler pursuits such as those mentioned in his pastimes may or may not be genuine interests of his, so I’ll skip on them here. Psychological torture and sex, however, are two things he enjoys quite a bit. » Dislikes: Akio isn’t particularly fond of his darling sister, and the feeling’s mutual. You could call it a love-hate relationship, but there’s not much love there. He’s also somewhat afraid of death and impalement on countless swords of hate, and is quite preoccupied with the avoidance of both.
